Abstract

The role of citta (the mind) and other subtle entities in the causation and management of an ailment has been detailed extensively in ancient Indian scriptures.
The need for such an understanding is most felt when we talk of the present day lifestyle related psychosomatic ailment – Diabetes Mellitus. The increasing use of mind modifying techniques in the management of diabetes mellitus has led to its scientific evaluation and documentation.
Exploring the underlying cause of the disease particularly diabetes mellitus in ancient Indian scriptures would form the basis for research hypothesis in clinical trials. This presentation is an attempt to compare the traditional concepts (Vedanta, Yoga and Ayurveda) with that of conventional understanding. In addition, explore underlying mechanisms as described in traditional texts for the known clinical benefits of yoga and Ayurveda in the management of diabetes mellitus.
